PRINTER DRIVERS FOR HP DESKJET PRINTERS

WINDOWS 2000 and XP: You should be able to load the HP DeskJet 660C driver that is included with all Windows installations. There should be no need to download a driver.

WINDOWS 95, 98 or NT: Before you download drivers from this web page, you should first attempt to install a suitable printer driver provided by Microsoft with Windows (HP DeskJet 550C for Windows 95; HP DeskJet 660-Color or 550C for Windows 98 or NT). This can be done by going through the standard Windows steps to add a printer (see step-by-step PRINTER INSTALLATION FROM WINDOWS instructions below).

Depending on how Windows 95, 98 or NT was installed on your laptop, one of three conditions may exist:

A. The installation completes normally (most typical).

B. Windows cannot find the drivers even though they are on your computer, and you do not have your Windows CD. In this case, when Windows asks you to insert the Windows CD, click the "BROWSE" or "Have Disk" button and direct Windows to the directory where the drivers can be found. For Windows 95 and 98 this is normally C:\Windows\Options\Cabs ; for Windows NT this is C:\i386 or C:\Winnt\i386 (the files you need have a ".cab" extension). The printer driver installation can then be completed.

C. If the appropriate directory is not on your computer, then you may download the driver from this page. Please note, this driver from HP is intended for Windows 95 but we have seen it work with Windows 98. There is no downloadable driver available for Windows NT that will work with this printer as it is configured. For NT you must install a suitable driver using the Windows CD. This driver is not recommended for XP.


PRINTER INSTALLATION FROM WINDOWS:

Click on MY COMPUTER, then PRINTERS, then ADD PRINTER, then NEXT. Select LOCAL PRINTER, and then NEXT, under "Manufacturers" select HP, under "Printers" for Win 95 select "HP DeskJet 550C", for Win 98/NT/XP select "HP DeskJet 660 (Color)". Click on NEXT. Select LPT1 and click NEXT. Click YES (to use this printer as your default printer) and then click on NEXT again. Select NO (so as not to print a test page) and then FINISH.

After you leave the hotel, you will want to re-establish your Default Printer. Return to PRINTERS, single-click on the printer that you want to have as your Default Printer. Then click on FILE, then select SET AS DEFAULT.

DOWNLOAD THE DRIVER: Download this driver into a new directory that you create specifically for it on your laptop. The name of the file you download will be "dj125en.exe". After it has been downloaded, double click on this file and it will un-compress, opening up the files that will be used to install the HP DeskJet 550 driver.

INSTALLING THE DOWNLOADED DRIVER: Click on MY COMPUTER, then PRINTERS, then ADD PRINTER, then NEXT. Select LOCAL PRINTER, and then NEXT, select HAVE DISK, then click on BROWSE, then locate the folder where you downloaded and un-compressed the printer drivers. The file "deskjetc.inf" will appear as being in this directory. Click on OK. Click on OK again. Select "DeskJet 550C Printer". Click on NEXT. Select LPT1 and click NEXT. Click YES (to use this printer as your default printer) and then click on NEXT again. Select NO (so as not to print a test page) and then FINISH.

After you leave the hotel, you will want to re-establish your Default Printer. Return to PRINTERS, single-click on the printer that you want to have as your Default Printer. Then click on FILE, then select SET AS DEFAULT.
